The holidays are such a magical time filled with lights, hot cocoa, and that sparkle in your kids’ eyes when they see Santa for the first time. I love exploring local spots with my family every year, and I wanted to share some of our favorite places to experience Christmas and holiday magic right here in Westchester, Fairfield, and Putnam County.

As a family photographer, I’m always on the lookout for beautiful seasonal spots that make perfect backdrops for photos and lasting memories.

Best Places to Experience Christmas Magic with Children

Radio City Christmas Spectacular, NY, NY

Okay, it’s technically NYC… but it’s a non-negotiable!

Yes, it’s a bit of a trek, but nothing compares to the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. My parents brought us when we were kids, and now I get to share the tradition with my own. Our children sit wide-eyed through the entire show and it’s pure holiday magic to witness.

Make a full NYC day of it; visit the Rockefeller Center tree, FAO Schwarz, Central Park, and finish at the Bryant Park Holiday Village. You’ll head home exhausted and happy, and your kids will talk about it for years.

Bronx Zoo Holiday Lights, Bronx, NY

We went on Member Preview Night, which meant fewer crowds and plenty of room for the kids to zip from display to display. We walked around to enjoy the displays, roasted marshmallows, mom and dad enjoyed an adult cocktail and our family rode the bug carousel, of course. We finished the evening with a delicious Italian meal at Enzo's on Arthur Avenue.

Harvest Moon Orchard, North Salem, NY - Illuminating Lights

This walk-through light display winds through the orchard with amazing displays. They have added more interactive elements for younger kids each year. Once you reach the top, treat yourself to a warm drink and take in the view. Just be sure to bundle up as it gets chilly on the hilltop!

Jones Family Farm, Shelton, CT

Cutting down our Christmas tree has become one of our favorite yearly traditions—and there’s truly something magical about it. The kids dart through the rows searching for the perfect tree, and once they’ve chosen “the one,” my husband (with plenty of enthusiastic help) saws it down and carries it to the loading area.

The farm offers a wonderful selection of tree varieties, so there’s always something beautiful to bring home. And once we’re done, we warm up with hot cider and a giant cookie by the fire pits for a cozy ending to a festive family outing.

Muscoot Farm Holiday on the Farm, Katonah, NY

Stroll the farm’s decorated barns, enjoy kid-friendly crafts and activities, listen to festive music, and say hello to the animals up close. It’s simple, sweet, and perfect for younger children.

Kensico Dam Plaza Winter Wonderland, Valhalla, NY

If you’re looking for holiday excitement without braving the cold, this drive-through experience is perfect. Stay cozy in the car while you enjoy over a mile of dazzling lights and ending with a wave from Santa himself.

Hollandia Nursery, Bethel, CT

Meet Santa and Mrs. Claus (who look like they stepped straight out of the North Pole!) in exchange for a small donation. While you’re there, browse the nursery for holiday décor, ornaments, and festive gifts.

Polar Express- Essex Steam Train, Essex, CT (also a little distance away but worth it)

A bit of a drive, but absolutely worth it. The staff on each train car is incredibly warm, engaging, and wonderful with kids. The “North Pole” scenery outside the window might feel a little understated to adults, but children are completely enchanted as ours talked about it for months.

Tickets sell out quickly, so hop online as soon as they’re released!

Bonus: Photo-Worthy Seasonal Spots

If you’re hoping to capture some holiday magic for your family album, here are a few spots that photograph beautifully:

  • Vintage trucks and trees at local nurseries (like Harvest Moon or Wilkens Farm)
  • Small-town main streets like Katonah, Ridgefield, or Cold Spring
  • Local tree farms with twinkle lights and hot cocoa stands

However your family celebrates the holidays, I hope this season is filled with lots of laughter, cozy moments, and tons of memories.

If you’re looking to capture your family’s holiday joy this year, I’d love to help. Whether it’s a seasonal session or a cozy in-home shoot, we can create images that feel true to your family’s story.
