Local Ski Guide for Families with Littles

Westchester, Putnam, Fairfield & Litchfield County Parents

If you live in Westchester County, Putnam County, Fairfield County, or Litchfield County, you’re lucky because you’re within easy driving distance of some of the best kid-friendly ski areas in the region. Skiing with little kids doesn’t have to mean long road trips or overwhelming resorts. With the right spots it can actually be fun.

Last winter, I introduced my two oldest to skiing and I am very proud of our journey so far. Last year, I took them separately and worked with them on the bunny hill. This year, I am able to take them both, on the magic carpet and the chairlift to work our way down the hills together. The girls have definitely got the bug, they never want to stop, even when their legs are noodles.

This local ski guide is written for parents skiing with toddlers and young children, focusing on beginner-friendly nearby mountains.

Family-Friendly Ski Areas Near Westchester, Putnam, Fairfield & Litchfield Counties

When skiing with littles, smaller and more approachable ski areas are often better than big destination resorts. These local mountains are popular with families because they’re close, affordable, and beginner-focused.

  • Thunder Ridge Ski Area (Putnam County, NY)
  • A top choice for Westchester and Putnam County families. Thunder Ridge offers a dedicated learning area, magic carpet lifts, and a relaxed atmosphere perfect for first-time skiers.
  • Mount Peter Ski Area (Orange County, NY – short drive)
  • Known for its excellent ski school and gentle beginner slopes, Mount Peter is a favorite for families introducing young kids to skiing.
  • Mohawk Mountain (Litchfield County, CT)
  • One of the most family-friendly ski resorts in Connecticut, Mohawk Mountain has great ski lessons for kids, wide beginner trails, and a welcoming lodge.
  • Sundown Mountain (Litchfield County, CT)
  • A solid option for Fairfield and Litchfield County families looking for varied beginner terrain and strong youth programs.
  • Mount Southington (Hartford County, CT)
  • Locals regularly bring young kids for lessons and short ski days, and many parents find the instructors welcoming and patient.

What to look for when skiing with kids:

  • Beginner-only learning zones
  • Magic carpet lifts instead of chairlifts - we love the new tunnel at Mohawk
  • Short, manageable runs
  • Easy parking and quick lodge access

Realistic Expectations for Skiing with Littles

Here’s the truth no one tells you: skiing with young kids is about time, not terrain.

A successful ski day with littles might look like:

  • Shorter ski day - a few runs for their little legs
  • A hot chocolate break
  • Leaving before anyone melts down

Whether you’re skiing in Putnam County or Litchfield County, ending the day early while everyone’s happy is always a win.
