Should You Include Pets in Your Newborn Photoshoot?

As an in-home newborn photographer serving Westchester County, NY, Fairfield County, CT, Putnam County, NY, and Litchfield County, CT, one of the most common questions I hear is whether pets can be included in a newborn photoshoot. The answer is absolutely, YES! As long as it is safe and comfortable for your family.

Pets are part of the story, and including them in your newborn photography session can make your images even more meaningful. Whether it’s a dog who’s been your first “baby” or a curious cat adjusting to a new family member, these moments help document life as it truly is during this special season.

Safety is always the top priority in every in-home newborn session across Westchester, Fairfield, Putnam, and Litchfield counties. Even the most gentle pets can be unpredictable around a newborn, so I always recommend considering your pet’s temperament, training, and comfort level before including them in your photos.

Simple preparation can make a big difference. A walk or play session before your photoshoot can help your pet feel more relaxed, and having an extra helper on hand can ensure everything runs smoothly. We can also create low-stress, natural setups or photograph your pet separately and safely incorporate them into your final gallery.

If your pet isn’t fully involved in the session, that’s completely okay. The goal is to create timeless, natural newborn photos that reflect your family authentically both with fur babies included or not.

If you’re planning a newborn photoshoot in Westchester County, NY, Fairfield County, CT, Putnam County, NY, or Litchfield County, CT, and are considering including your pet, I’m happy to help plan a session that feels relaxed, safe, and meaningful for your whole family.
