Weekend Getaways – Driving Distance (Summer Edition)

From a Family Photographer in Westchester, Putnam & Fairfield County

Summer with kids feels long in the best way but goes by in a bling of an eye. Don't wait to plan an unforgettable getaway with your family.

As a family photographer based in Westchester, Putnam, and Fairfield County, I’m always drawn to places that feel easy but special. Close enough for a manageable drive, but far enough to feel like a true escape.

Here are some of my favorite summer weekend getaways for families.

🌊 Montauk, NY

Montauk in the summer just hits differently. Our family does a long weekend with all the cousins and it definitely is a crowd favorite (pictured above).

Wide beaches, rolling dunes, and golden sunsets that feel endless. For families, it’s the perfect mix of laid-back and scenic. The beaches are beautiful but not overly chaotic, and there’s something about Montauk light that feels straight out of a photo session.

If you’re the kind of family who loves salty air and slow mornings, this is your spot.

🐚 Cape Cod, MA

Cape Cod is classic summer nostalgia.

Hydrangeas in bloom. Bike trails. Ice cream after dinner. Weathered shingles and quiet beaches that stretch for miles.

It’s ideal for families who want space to breathe. Rent a house, stock the fridge, spend your days at the beach, and let the kids just be kids. The rhythm here is slow in the best possible way.

From a photographer’s perspective, Cape Cod light at golden hour is dreamy with lots of coastal vibes.

🌞 Ocean City, MD

If your family loves high-energy fun, Ocean City delivers.

It’s vibrant and packed with activities, including; boardwalk rides, arcade games, funnel cake, or mini mini golf. The beach stretches for miles, and there’s no shortage of entertainment for every age.

This is the kind of trip where your camera roll fills up fast!

🏔 Lake Placid – Upstate Adirondacks

Lake Placid isn’t just magical in winter but the summer here is equally beautiful.

Think kayaking on Mirror Lake, hiking with mountain views, paddle boards at sunset, and small-town charm. It’s active without feeling overwhelming.

For families who love the outdoors but want walkable town access, this is such a great balance.

🚤 Lake George

Lake George in summer is all about the water.

Boat days, swimming, lakeside restaurants, and that classic Americana summer feel. It’s lively but still family-friendly, with plenty to do beyond just the beach.

🌾 Bonus: Block Island, RI

Block Island feels like stepping back in time in the best way.

It’s quieter than other beach destinations, with dramatic bluffs, bike paths, and relaxed beach days. You ferry over, slow down immediately, and just settle into island time.

For families wanting something a little different, it's less commercial and more coastal charm. This is such a special summer weekend destination!

Why Summer Weekends Matter

As a family photographer and a mom of four, I see it all the time, years blur together, but you remember the summers.

The sandy car seats. The beach towels that never fully dry. The way your kids looked running toward the water without hesitation.

Weekend getaways don’t have to be extravagant to be meaningful. Sometimes they just need to be intentional.

And the best part? Every one of these destinations is completely doable from Westchester, Putnam, or Fairfield County without boarding a plane.

Because these are the seasons you’ll want to remember. ☀️
